Our Glover Lane Home

After we first moved to our new home [almost] two years ago, I used drive in & out of our neighborhood via the route that would take me by my old home - our "Glover Lane Home" as we call it.

But, not so much anymore.

Because I kinda get sad about what's become of it.

It was purchased by a couple who had no intention of ever making it "their home."  They were only interested in buying an "investment."  Although, they did live in it for a short time to justify the type of loan they got on it, it's mostly been inhabited by renters.

I find myself being protective of our "Glover Lane Home" and I notice the details of things that are "wrecking" it - like they sprayed some yellow foam stuff in all the driveway cracks, and it's oozing out and looks.....SO not good!  But, hey! that same driveway is full of snazzy, new cars; a red truck, a Cadillac, & black sports/luxury cars.  (I'm afraid that's where their regard [& money] goes.)  I cringe when I see all the things that the various renters are letting slide.  Overgrown plants, weeds, dead grass - not that we are champion gardeners by any means - SCREAM out to me, We don't love this house.  And that's sad to me because we did (in fact,  I love it! are the exact words I exclaimed the moment our Realtor let us in to look at it all those years ago) - and I want it to continue to be loved!  Sure, we ultimately outgrew it, and there were things [functionally] that were a nuisance, it didn't meet our needs anymore, that's why we built & moved, but I'm talking more about the HOME we loved.  The HOME which holds our history, memories, & hearts.  How could it not?  We lived there for 11 1/2 years!

My friend & I sometimes walk by it on our morning walks, which we did this week, and like always, I check it out - any signs of love, attention, concern?  I wonder if she notices that she kinda "loses" me in our conversation at that moment we pass it?  It's weird....I KNOW, in my brain, it's my old home, but it's almost like it doesn't even seem like it.  It's changed.  It doesn't look as bright to me anymore.  It's more somber & drab.  (Although, to others not emotionally attached, it may still look the same?)  Our kids have wondered aloud, if we ever drive by, what it looks like on the inside, now.  Kyle, especially, wants to devise a way that he could walk through it again.  The curious part of me also wonders and wants to take a look, but the other part of me doesn't - I might want to keep everything in my mind just the way I remember it!
 {last photo as we drove away in 2012}
The day we moved all our stuff out, we were racing against a deadline and we didn't have a ton of time to get all sentimental and pay tribute to every room & such...AND we were sweating so much, I don't think there was any liquid left in my body to cry.

BUT, I still thought:

How could I let that thing go?

How can I let go of where all my daughters learned to walk?

They each learned to grab hold of the cabinet knobs & drawer pulls and "play" (read: empty everything out of) with the measuring cups, pots, water bottles, Tupperware containers that were inside.

How could I walk away from that kitchen where I prepared ten thousand meals, my children at my side (read: under my feet)?

My children built a gazillion forts and we had hundreds of Family Home Evenings in our living room.

There was the "time out" corner over on the staircase landing, that fit our time out bench perfectly, we used A LOT!

There were the stairs where a the children slid down laughing gleefully in sleeping bags or pillow cases.....and where brothers would chase/run from each other making the loudest pounding noise as they barreled down - which then, unfortunately, sometimes ended in a crashing sound as frames were knocked off the wall at the bottom.

We finished the basement, painted every room, remodeled one big bathroom into two separate bathrooms, and replaced all the flooring except for one room in that house while we were there!

There were big dormer window seats where the kids liked to sit upon & hang out.  Kyle split his head open on one of the windowsills.  The boys learned to shoot a basketball pretty darn well in that hoop we once had attached to the house (before the incident), then was replaced with a driveway basketball hoop.

We had 11 Christmases there.  59 Birthdays.  Brought home 3 new babies.  3 Baptisms.  4 Priesthood Ordinations.
    {Miss B's 1st Birthday - May 2009}

That home is where we built our family.

Back in Layton & North Salt Lake & Brigham City where we lived for six years before we moved here is where we were seedlings.  We had just the two boys.  We rented from apartment to apartment, and lived in a "starter home" too far north in Davis County for our liking.  We weren't ready to settle.

But when we got to the "Glover Lane" one, we put down our roots.

And it's filled to the very brim with memories that have made our lives rich and beautiful.

There will always be a special spot in our hearts for that great home of ours we grew together in.

It's where we became "US."

There's a lot to say about a home and how it molds a family.

I'm so grateful that one that took care of us for so long.

{And, yes!  we love our new home with all our hearts, too.  (In case you were starting to doubt.)  The memories have already started heaping up in this thing.  Our next chapter is going to be amazing, as well.}

So, that's why I feel melancholy when I see the house these days - it appears they don't appreciate it the way I do.  I feel like the renters will just keep moving in & out, then eventually move on and forget about it.  I hope that someday it will be sold to a family who will be able to own it and live in it and love it again.
It just dawned on me that my feelings for our "Glover Lane" home might stem from one of my favorite childhood books, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton.
This house went through a period of being loved, then neglected, then loved again.  The ending always made me so happy when the great-great-granddaughter of the man who built the house found it and bought it.  Once again it was lived in and well taken care of.

Maybe that can happen to our "Glover Lane Home" too!  :)

WHAT "Lazy Days of Summer?"

This is officially the last week of Summer vacation for us and it's simply CRAZY to me.  How can it be over just like that?

Every year, my children mourn the end of summer and dread the start of school, lamenting,
"We didn't even DO anything this summer!!"
in their best feeling-jipped-voices.  Which really means they didn't do a million, ba-jillion, totally outrageous, much-too-lofty-of-a-plan, EXPENSIVE, UNREALISTIC things.  Like go to Legoland, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, The Grand Canyon, Seven Peaks, Timpanogas Cave, the Taj Majal, MLB games, Florida, Texas, New York, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Washington, Canada AND Mexico at least once each.  And that they didn't go to Boondocks, swimming, Dairy Queen, Galaxy, the zoo, Classic Fun Center, mini golfing, bowling, gymnastics class, to the movies & museums, boating, hiking, to the beach, and parachuting at least once a week.
And they LOOK OVER the ton of "other things" they DID do!

It never works -- I never have felt sorry for them!

UNTIL THIS YEAR.

Because, THIS YEAR, when they say, We didn't even DO anything this summer.....it's pretty much true!

As far as the traditional SUMMER-ISH FUN that is supposed to go on.

I even bought a pool punch pass and declared, This summer we are going to have "Water Wednesdays" which means we will go swimming every Wednesday.

We went once.

I'm joining the "feeling jipped" members of my family now.

Matt & I even missed our August date....and we were doing SO WELL - DANG!  But, we're in San Diego together right now, just the two of us, does THAT count?!?  ;)

Instead of the "Lazy Days of Summer" we've:

  • Sold our home -- TWICE!  (The first people cancelled after a couple of weeks)
  • Signed, dated, scanned, and emailed back and forth 14 addendums for the sell of our home.  (Our realtor joked with us that he should start taking a higher commission on offers that go past five!)
  • Which also meant I had a continual stream of phone calls and texts from the Realtor
  • AND we kept showing our home until we past the "Due Diligence" period with the buyers.
  • Built a new home
  • Made 1,000 decisions on brick, paint, tile, floorboards, door knobs, driveway and walkway shapes, trex decking color, lights, woods, closet layouts, faucets, stucco, windows, trim, size of patio, banisters, patterns, doors on the left or on the right?, plug outlets down low or up high or somewhere in the middle?, If I should UP my anxiety meds or keep them the same.....
  • AND then made many of these decisions AGAIN when the bids came back TOO HIGH or TOO LOW (who am I kidding?  THAT never happened!), or my selections were OUT OF STOCK, or the granite slabs I had picked out BROKE the day before they were to be delivered & installed.
  • Called the builder way too many times MORE than he wanted me to.
  • Babysat the builder.
  • Made the builder fix way too many MORE mistakes than he wanted to.
  • Fought with the builder.
  • Started the loan process with a lender for our new home.
  • Completed tons of paperwork and scrounged up all kinds of info they wanted about past names, drugs taken, jobs, income, marital status, insurance, residences, driving record, credit scores, best recipe for chocolate chip cookies, etc.
  • And then the underwriters came back with a list a "conditions" and we had to send them a butt load of other things; copies of account statements and down payment checks and employment verification and my mammogram results....(just wondering if you're still paying attention!)
  • All the while fielding 10 calls/texts (minimum) a day from the lender with updates and requests -- one of which I was not able to take because I had just gotten rear ended on my way back from picking out my granite the second time at the warehouse too far away from my home!
  • Closed on our home - and became renters of our own [well now THEIR] home.  We paid more in rent than we did our mortgage pymt - so sad!
  • Packing up our home
  • Gathering boxes from all sources:  KSL.com, Walmart, friends & family, the Liquor store (it's TRUE - they're great for our canned foods/food storage)
  • Packing up
  • Packing
  • Packed some more  - it just grew!  When I thought we had done a ton - there was still a ton to do!
  • Moved the majority of our things into THE GARAGE of the new house (we hadn't officially closed & it wasn't ready yet) because our buyers were taking possession of ours SOON!
  • Shop for and buy beds & bedroom sets for the kids who were changing their sleeping situation (going from a shared room to an own room, going from a toddler bed to a "big girl" bed, etc.)
  • Packed up the "essentials" we had kept with us at our home, including my work office stuff because I worked up until the last day we lived in that home.
  • Moved the rest into the garage
  • Cleaned & did paint touch ups at the old  [empty] home -- thanks to my VT, brother's family, and MIL for helping us with this trying-to-beat-the-5PM-deadline-to-be-out-EFFORT!
  • Signed closing papers on the new house
  • Got frequent phone call updates from the lender who "camped out" at the title company for two days making sure that our case was getting worked and pushed it through.(thanks to him!)
  • Then when we got word that the house was officially ours, we moved AGAIN.  We could move the things from the garage into the new house.  Word came in the late afternoon, so we didn't have anything set up to sleep, so we stayed at our brother & sister-in-law's house that night.(thanks to them!)
  • Unpack the new house
  • Move things in from the garage to the house
  • Put everything away
  • Forgot where I put it away
  • Unpack some more
  • Put together beds
  • Unpack
  • Hang butcher paper in the windows (after I got tired of crawling around on the floor below window level) so the neighbors don't "get more than they bargained for."
  • Unpack
  • Called all the Utility companies to stop service at our old home and start at the new one.
  • No one knows our address exists, so make several other phones calls to resolve this....still not sure if it's totally "resolved."
  • Call for Internet
  • Comcast won't serve my "area" - yet the homes on all the streets surrounding me have it - am I not in their same "neighborhood?"
  • So desperate for internet use, set up an "Internet Cafe" on my in-laws porch and "tapped into" their wireless internet.
  • Call another company for Internet - they can't come out for another week.
  • Begged and bargained with my co-workers to cover my shifts since I didn't have the capability to work from home without internet
  • The internet co. came out and couldn't find a ground wire --then they do -- but the main cable has been spliced (inadvertently?) and they can't get anyone out for 4-5 days to fix it.
  • Went over to my neighbor's to use her internet --Since when did we become so dependent on The Internet????
  • Had to drive out to the [way too far away] JetBlue office to work (due to no internet and phone at home) when I couldn't get shifts covered at 2:45 in the morning - yep, just me and one semi on the road at that time!
  • Unpack
  • Meanwhile, we haven't received mail for 10 days - after 3 trips to the post office, we start getting our current mail, but no one knows what happened to all the mail BEFORE she "found" us!
  • Unpack
  • It takes a couple of phone calls to get new garbage cans delivered, so we have tons of garbage bags piling up.  THEN once they'res delivered, the garbage man passes us by - he can't find us either?!?  This warrants a trip down to city hall myself to get this straightened out.  WHEN YOU'VE JUST MOVED, YOU HAVE TONS OF GARBAGE and we can't be skipped!
  • Hire someone to install cold storage shelving
  • Get a water softener guy to our new house -- hard water and oil-rubbed bronze faucets and fixtures DO NOT GO TOGETHER!
  • Go up and down the stairs 25+ times a day - needing a shower by the end of the day from all the sweating I'm doing.  I've lost 5 lbs. in the last three weeks.  It's called the packing-moving-unpacking diet!
  • And I managed to get Ryan registered for High School (his Junior year!) and Kyle registered for Jr. High (an 8th Grader!)  WHAT?!
  • And we went school shopping - four different days for four different children.  I realized, girls are FUN to shop with - BOYS are not.
So, ALL of THAT dominated our whole entire summer!  But, we're in our new home (pictures coming sometime!)  not totally MOVED IN, but we are sleeping there now.  There are still unpacked boxes and things in the garage that need to be put away, but we're working on it EVERY DAY - some project or another.

Next up:
Window coverings
couches
Bonus room organizational system - I don't know what to do!  Suggestions?
yard
other furniture
TV(s) (that's only on Matt's list)  :)

So, we're FAR from done.  WAAAAAAAHH!

BUT, to make up for everyone's "LOST SUMMER" we've got a Fall Family Vacation coming up that we have been saving for and planning for years......

It will be a nice break from all the selling/buying/moving WORK we've spent the summer doing.  :)

Inspiration from Late Night T.V.

The other night, while watching Jay Leno Headlines, we think we found the answer to why our home hasn't sold yet.

Jay Leno showed an Ad from the newspaper that reads:

Homes For Sale

STUNNING VIEWS, Private Boat Dock,

Deep Water/Sailboat Access Canal,

Private Beach Access, Elegant Marble

Floors Throughout, Granite/Stainless

Kitchen, 15 Foot Dramatic Cherry Ceiling.

A FREE PIZZA with purchase.

Oh my word! We've been going about it ALL WRONG! Up until this point, we have only been marketing our HOME - and we have failed to offer the pizza! Is that all it would take? What were we thinking?!?

Well, here's our official [exciting] announcement. As of right now, we're throwing in a PIZZA for the someone who buys our home!! Serious. I will.

Enjoy Jay's entire Headlines clip from that night...

My Punishment

I feel like I should RECALL my last post. My ridiculing/disgust of a house we looked at has brought me BAD KARMA!

Not even 12 hours after publishing that post, I was sitting in the hair salon chair with foils in 1/3 of my hair.

My cell phone rings. It is my listing Realtor. He says someone wants to come look at our home between 11:00-12:00 TODAY. It is 9:50 a.m. My hair appointment will go until 11:00 at which time I need to go check Ryan out of school to take him to his orthodontist appt., followed by taking him out to lunch & to get a smoothie - it is his 15th Birthday! I'm not going to be home for the next 3 HOURS!

He tells me that, typically, if you ask an Agent to come later, THEY WON'T. They'll just cross you off their list due to inconvenience.

I'm torn. The house is not ready. I'm not going to cancel my plans with the Birthday Boy to return home and get it ready. If a potential buyer sees it in it's current state - they won't want to buy it (most likely). But, if they don't even come to see it at all, they most definitely won't buy it. I finally decide that letting them come to the unacceptable-for-a-showing home increases my chances of a sale SLIGHTLY over refusing a showing. The slightest chance. Very Faint chance. Almost next to nothing chance. But SOMETHING all the same. Oh Crap! My Realtor told me he would just disclose that no one was home, and we wouldn't be all morning, and to "look past" the mess. (It didn't work for us - we were incapable of "looking past." See previous post.)

The hairdresser was ears to this whole conversation, so she hurried it up a bit and I was able to get out of there at 10:45 a.m. I zoom up to my home, hoping I can haul out the "STUFF" before they came....but there were already 2 cars parked in front of my home when I came upon it. What?!? Only 1 hr and 10 minutes notice to begin with AND then they come EARLY, too?!!? THE NERVE! Such is the life of selling a home.

I drove on by and tried to recollect just HOW things looked when I left it this morning. (I was pretty certain it wasn't good.)

I didn't get the full picture until I came back 3 hours later and did a "walk through" myself. (It wasn't good. No. No. No.)

Here are the "HIGHLIGHTS"

In addition to not being able to do the USUAL last minute things of vacuuming, sweeping, spraying air fragrance, turning on the lights, and opening the shutters.....

  • First of all, it is Ryan's Birthday, so they were greeted with our traditional Birthday signage on the garage.

  • Also, on the driveway....it appears that the kids got a hold of all those rotten apples I'd thrown away and had a "Apple fight" with them, causing them to splatter on the driveway. It very much resembled vomit.
  • We had opened all of Ryan's Birthday presents this morning before school, so that aftermath (presents and wrapping/boxes) hadn't been cleared out of the front room, yet.
  • Laundry in the baskets on the Laundry Room floor
  • "To-be-washed" stack on top of the dryer'
  • a bag of "Squeaky Cheese" left out on the Kitchen counter
  • dishes in the sink (since the dishwasher was CLEAN and the child on dishwasher duty had failed to empty it before leaving for school!)
  • cups, plates, knife, toothpicks on Kitchen table/counter
  • coloring paper, pencil, crayon box out on the table
  • FULL garbage cans in just about every room, including in full view in the Kitchen
  • Kitchen table not wiped off - complete with crumbs, spills, & smudges
  • Blanket on Living Room chair
  • scriptures left on the floor from this morning's reading
  • Miss B's clothes that she'd had an "accident" in were soaking in the bathroom sink
  • Bath towel on the floor
  • The toilet seat was UP -- and there was PEE in the toilet!
  • NO beds were made - including mine that Miss B had made a "nest" on with 8+ pillows this morning while I was getting ready
  • I had pulled all the contents out that didn't belong on Katelyn's closet floor this morning since she couldn't find her shoes, and then told her to "take care of it" - Did she? NOPE.
  • PJ's, shoes and socks, & backpacks on the bedroom floors
  • wilty plants that needed watering
  • Towels sloppily flung on the racks
  • a Piggy Bank in the middle of the Family Room floor (random)
  • clothes bulging out of the dresser drawers in the Boys' room
  • the Hamster smell in the Playroom
  • bathroom counters cluttered with toothbrushes
  • Toys not organized in Playroom

(Just to name a "few")

I was laughing for most of this "tour" - I was. I had Matt on the phone and I was commentating to him the "State of The Brenchley Home." Because WHAT COULD I DO at that point? If I didn't LAUGH, I would CRY, so I laughed (and cringed!)

But, there was ONE THING that made me SCREAM. When I went into MY room, I saw my underwear out IN PLAIN SIGHT. And what's worse is that they weren't exactly clean. I had partially hand-washed them last night after a certain monthly "incident" had taken me by surprise....ya know....and then hung them out to dry to avoid putting wet items in the hamper....I am officially horrified! Yep, I just CAN'T lose that Murphy! ;)

I just can't wait to hear the feedback from these people!! :)

After I cleared off the counter a little bit, I did find the Realtor's business card. I'm glad she found somewhere to put it! :)

So, is this a case of What-Goes-Around-Comes-Around? I ripped on someone else's house, and NOW those people get to do the same about me! But the house I looked at had at least 36 hours notice....I had none.

I went right to work cleaning the kitchen (and taking care of that "article of clothing") when I got home to help relax my CRINGING muscles!

GOOD THING, too, because I got another phone call from the Realtor. Someone else is coming to see our home at 6:00 p.m.

We'll be ready this time!!

House Hunting Horrors

We found a house online that we wanted our Realtor to take us to see. The photos online were decent. Matt thought the garage looked a little strange since it was "out of proportion" with the house (height-wise) but we went to see it anyway.

We walked in the front door and immediately had to STEP OVER the play swords that were on the floor right in front of the entryway. Kyle said, "COOL!" and picked them up to entertain himself with, but then he couldn't decide if he should keep playing with that or choose the bat & ball, light saber, dump truck, crayons, or one of the other 20 things that were sprawled across the floor. Brookelle went straight to the rocking horse that was in the foyer and mounted it.

As the rest of us stood there in shock, Katelyn posed the question, "Are they trying to SELL their house?" As in my Katelyn, the one who is synonymous with "MESS."

{Exhibit A}

The first thing out of Ryan's mouth was, "I guess they weren't expecting us?" Ryan said that. The same Ryan whose room looks like this (after "cleaning" it).
{Exhibit B}
Now I wish I had my camera that day to document the...."experience" but I did not. Maybe from now on, that'll be a good idea. You'll just have to visualize this time.....

We went through the rest of the house.

There were:

  • various toys on every stair.
  • Mattresses on the floor (in between 2 other beds) so we couldn't even walk in.
  • make shift boards for shelves
  • dishes in the sink
  • dirty clothes on the floor of the laundry room
  • books, scarves, papers, blankets, towels - you name it - on the floors throughout the house
  • boxes and JUNK that filled the whole back half of the garage

I really felt the URGE to start picking up the place!

When they took the photos online, obviously the house was in a much different condition, and the bathroom looked nice.

But, the day we went there, I don't even remember seeing this bathroom. I kept trying to verify with the Realtor that this was the same house.
In the Master bathroom, the floor was piled high with:
  • panties
  • towels
  • clothes
  • magazines
  • toys
  • cheese grater -- just kiddin' on that one, but I wouldn't be surprised!

On the bathroom counter/vanity, they'd opened a drugstore, I tell you - it was covered with:

  • bottles of personal care products
  • hair dryers
  • make up
  • brushes
  • strung-out dental floss
  • [used] kleenex
  • photos
  • homework
  • Town House crackers -- I didn't actually SEE this, but I'm sure it was under everything else. ;)

The photos online are PROOF that there are SINKS in this bathroom, but I couldn't view any that day!

After that, we "passed" on going into the other bathrooms. Because if the Master looked like that....what would the kid's bathroom look like?

The photos on the Real Estate website were taken when the house was vacant. Obviously. Here's a sample of a bedroom. Pink. Good. I have three girls. No problem filling that one...

But, ya know...now I'm having the hardest time remembering a pink room at all.

I DO remember:

  • every single bed was UNmade
  • a mountain of shoes on the floor of the walk-in closet
  • boxes (unpacked?) on the floor
  • all curtains were drawn shut - maybe that was a good thing? Limited the view.
  • more toys, clothes, pencils, empty water bottles, and toenail clippers

We had to keep telling the kids to "quit playing with stuff!" But talk about DISTRACTION! We found that we, too, quit looking at THE HOUSE and were only noticing the "shock factors."

We opened the door to the basement and noticed that it was unfinished, I opted out of even going down and instead said, "Let's go!"

As for the kitchen.....

It could've been nice, it really could've... if you could get past the crunching underneath your feet as you walked and the cupboard doors that were hanging off by only one hinge. It would've been nice to see what the counter tops were like, but the bowls/plates with half-eaten food left in them and boxes of food were covering it up.

There was also a wad of chewed up gum stuck to the Kitchen counter. NO LIE!

I thought I'd seen it all until I saw THIS there, too:

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, right?!? As I was trying to control my GAG reflexes, and NOT think about what goes on in this house, a closer look confirmed to me that it really wasn't what it looked like at first sight, but instead.... was a Ramen Noodle seasoning packet. Whew! Since when do you say, "Whew!" for a disaster Kitchen?!? Needless to say, we did not open the fridge or turn on most of the lights - thus the misinterpretation of the Ramen packet?!

We did find out that the owners have moved out, but they couldn't afford to leave it empty, so there are renters living in the house.

And the last thing Renters want is to be OUT of Housing.

On our way out of there, I actually said to Matt, "I feel like our home is pretty darn clean!" And that's coming from me, who prays that unannounced visitors don't come over [again] because of this:

{Exhibit C}
