How To Impress Your Kids

This came in the mail:

Our daughters are SO AMAZED about the fact
that their parents must be such Celebreties
that THE DANBURY MINT
has made a Special Edition "Suzanne & Matt" ring to sell
and that it is featured in their exclusive catalog that they send out to millions!!!

(I'm sure it'll be flying off the shelves - or the internet!)

We chose NOT to correct their assumptions!
We gotta take any admiration and respect we can get from them!  ;)

Miscues, Misunderstandings, and Mistakes

I just spent my weekend at Queen of the Kingdom with about 400 other women.
It is a training/learning opportunity and women's conference by the company, 3 Key Elements.

But, in addition to being trained all weekend, there were some funny/embarrassing/baffling parts of the weekend, too.  :)

#1  For one activity, words to a song were passed out, and we sang together.  It was a song that I was not familiar with, had never heard.  The title is, "Princess" as sung by Galen Crew.  In the song, there's a sentence where the lyrics pause....pause...pause while music is playing softly, then the final words of the sentence are sung after the pause.
So, here's my disclaimer: if you didn't know the song (like I didn't) and were only looking at the printed words on our paper, you might not get the tune/tempo/timing right, at first.
As we were all standing and singing as a group, the leader/mentor (who was wired with a mike) was walking through the crowd, and would touch our arm, signaling she wanted us to sing with her (and louder?!)  Well, she came up to me, and at that moment, it happened to be that one part of the song with the pause!  So, I'm all singing with her (kinda louder than I had been) and I totally jumped the gun on those lyrics that were suppose to come AFTER the pause, and I sang out strong (near her mike) during the pause!  Woops!  It was heard by many!  AND the thing is; my premature entrance on my singing caused her to follow and sing at the wrong time, too!  hahaha.

#2  For another activity, we walked around the room and mingled with as many other women as we could in a designated period of time.  We were suppose to go up to someone and say, "What do you see in me?"  And then, they were suppose to just look at us, and go with their feelings/intuition and say the first word that came to their mind.  We would then switch roles, and the other person would ask us the same question, and we would tell them what we "saw."  We were suppose to write down what everyone said, so that at the end, we had a whole list of attributes about us.
So, I'm going along doing the activity, and had already talked to many when I come to a new [younger] woman and I asked, "What do you see in me?"
And she replied, "Dumb S_ _ _"
Taken back, I asked, "Pardon?"
"Dumb S_ _ _," she said again.
By now I'm thinking, Is she REALLY saying that about me?  Or is this the new "compliment" amongst the younger crowd these days?
But, just to be sure, I repeated back to her, "Did you say 'dumb s_ _ _?'"
And she said, "NO. Dumb s_ _ _."
Well, I was relieved she said, "No" but I was still hearing the same word that followed.
She must've seen my perplexed face because then she repeated it more slowly so I could understand this time, "Gumption."
"Oh, gumption!?!" I responded.
"Yes," she answered.
Whew!  I'll take it!  Following what I'd just thought I heard, that was the best word ever!  Gumption: initiative, resourcefulness, ingenuity, sense, backbone, courage, spunk.

#3 On one of our breaks, I had to go to the bathroom, and so I headed to it.  There was another lady entering the bathroom ahead of me, and the door was closed about half-way when I reached it, so I pushed it open so I could go in after her.  The lady turned and stood in front of the door opening and blocked me from going any further.
"This is a one-person bathroom," she informed me.
Huh?!?  How many bathrooms don't have multiple stalls these days?  I just assumed......
Well, you know what they say about assuming.....
As soon as I realized what was going on, I apologized profusely.  Poor lady.....she probably thought I wanted to "share" in her using the facilities experience that day - which I totally didn't!

Oh, dear.  Just a sampling of the cringeworthy things that happen to me on a regular basis!  ;)

Kids Say the Darndest Things - April '14 Edition

Taken from the sidebar....

Miss B & I were talking about how old she was when she went to preschool and which home we lived in at the time. We figured out that she never went to school while living in our old home, it all happened while in the new one.....Brookelle: "So, what did I do the whole time in the old house?  Just be LAZY?!?   4/14

Brookelle and I were at McDonald's for "lunch."  She was eating chicken Mcnuggets and I was having a drink.  She pulled something out of her mouth when she was eating one of her nuggets.

Brookelle: "What's THIS?"
Me: "I don't know.  Is it a hard-to-chew piece?"
Brookelle: "Yes."
Me: "Just wrap it in your napkin, then."
AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON HER NEXT NUGGET!
Brookelle: "What could this hard thing be in my nugget?"
Me: [joking] "Hmmm....do you think it's the beak?   Or the chicken claw?"
(Brookelle looked uncomfortable for a couple of seconds, then with a smile & a sweet voice)
Brookelle: "Mom, would you like to eat the rest of my nuggets?"   4/14

Kids Say the Darndest Things - Mar. '14 Edition

Taken from the sidebar......

Brookelle: "Oh my word, _______'s (a child in her carpool) car is SO MESSY!  It's a disaster.
Me: "Really?"
Brookelle: "Yes!   Like my bedroom!"  3/14

Matt & I had attended a 3 day "Royalty & Romance" marriage conference and when we came home the girls were asking about it.....

Me: "Well, we learned this home we live in is our KINGDOM.  Dad is the KING and I am the QUEEN.   So, guess what that makes you children?"
Haylee: "Me, Katelyn & Brookelle are the PRINCESSES!"
Katelyn: "And Ryan & Kyle are the PRINCES!"
Brookelle: "So, who's the MAID?!?"   3/14

Brookelle: "You know what Uncle Mike says?"
Me: "What?"
Brookelle: "He says ALL my bones are good!"
Me: (thinking...trying to interpret the meaning for a second) "Oh!   Did he say 'You don't have a mean bone in your body'?"
Brookelle: "Yes!  Because, ya know, I don't hurt people or say bad things about them...."
Me: "Oh, yes.  That's very true about you."
Brookelle: "But, ya know ________? (a kid in her class) He only has 3 good bones, and the rest are mean bones!"  3/14

Kids Say the Darndest Things - Feb. '14 Edition

Taken from the sidebar.....

Matt was quite sick, so we had our Home Teacher come over to give him a Priesthood blessing.....Man: "What is your full name?"
Matt: "Matthew Lane"
Katelyn: (blurts out right before the blessing is to start) "What?  Really?!?  Your middle name is 'Lane'?"
Matt: "Ya - Did you not know that?......FOR 9 YEARS?"
Katelyn: "NO!"
Man: (pointing to Matt in Price-is-Right-style) "This is your father."
I don't think Katelyn heard a word of the blessing because she was still thinking about it after it was over.....
Katelyn: "So, dad's middle name is, 'Lane'?"
Me: "Yep."
Katelyn: "How did I not know that?"
Me: "I don't know."
Katelyn: "Lane?   Like we used to live on Glover LANE?  Why did they name him, 'Lane'?"
Me: "Ask Grandma."  2/14

Friday Funnies OR Things I've Heard on the Job #9

"Funnies"  - Did anyone else used to call the comics in the Sunday newspaper, "the funnies"?
We did in my family.
Since that's what I'm going to share with you today, AND it is a Friday, I'm calling this post, "Friday Funnies" -- and it might become a regular feature???  Who knows?
My material also comes from a customer while I was "On the phones at JetBlue."
The call was coming to a natural end and I was about to bid him farewell.....
Customer:  "WAIT!  Can I ask you one more thing?"
Based on past experience, my immediate thought was, Oh no, it's one of those guys!
(Like the foot fetish guy who asks if I'm wearing any shoes.  Like the hand fetish guy who asks how big my hands are.  Like the Perv who asks what kind of lingerie I wear.  Like the whatever psycho who asks a variety of freaky &/or inappropriate questions.)
Me:  (guarded)  "OK."
Customer:  "Where does a one-legged woman work?"
(After that question, I STILL thought he was going to turn it into something sick & wrong.  Should I disconnect the call?)
Me: (still guarded)  "Where?"
Customer:  "IHOP"
Hahahaha.  Oh, whew!  What a pleasant surprise!  It was a REAL joke!  :)
Customer:  "I've got one more for you."
Me:  (guard down this time)  "OK."
Customer:  "What did one eye say to the other eye?
Me:  "What?"
Customer:  "Don't look now, but there's something between us that smells."
Bwah ha haha.  Instead of a dirty, old man....he turned out to be a clever, delightful man!  :)
Happy Friday!  (And Valentine's Day!)

Brookelle: "Her finger was just moving on to the next letter too fast. It takes time to guess. Doesn't she know that? Oh, no, she doesn't -- she's OLD!" 8/13

Kids Say the Darndest Things - Jun. '12 Edition

Taken from the sidebar...

Haylee's pet hamster, Lily, died and we buried her in our backyard. The kids wanted to keep digging up her grave and looking at her again. I told them we couldn't do that. They wanted to know if we could dig her up when we move and bury her in the new house's yard. I told them we couldn't do that either....
The Children: "WHY?"
Me: "Dead bodies start to deteriorate - after a while, she won't look the same."
The Children: "What does THAT mean?
Me: The fur will fall out, the skin will sluff off until all that's left is a skeleton."
The next day.....
Brookelle: "Is Lily a BONE yet?" 6/12

Kids Say the Darndest Things - Apr. '12 Edidtion

Taken from the sidebar...

I was talking to Brookelle about the fact that she is the ONLY one in our whole family who has their own bedroom...
Brookelle: "We need another human in our family."
Me: "Do you wish you had your twin brother, Brady, so you could share a room with him?"
Brookelle: "Yeah. Where is he?"
Me: "Did you leave him up in heaven, and you just came down alone?"
Brookelle: "Yep. That means he gets to see Jesus ALL a lot!"
Me: "Yep."
Brookelle: "When am I going to go to heaven?"
Me: "You lived in heaven before you came to our family."
Brookelle: "I want to go and see Jesus again!"
4/12

Miss B was playing alone in the next room....

Brookelle: "Mother!"
Me: "What?"
Brookelle: "I'm not talking to YOU!"
Me: "Oh, I thought you were. I heard you call, 'Mother,' and that's me!"
Brookelle: "No, YOU ARE MAMA!"
(She was just pretend playing) 4/12

We had a special musical number in church on Sunday. It consisted of a pianist, violinist, and a clarinetist....
