The Behind-the-Scenes Story

Over time, I've learned a few "tricks" when showing a home - especially when you have very little or NO notice.  Allow me to share them with you....

Throw any extra stuff laying around the house, including the training potty because NO ONE wants to see that - YUCK!, in the back of your car before leaving.
Or throw it in between rows of seats - that works, too.
It's the laundry baskets full of CLEAN clothes that you haven't had a chance to fold and put away yet.  It's also the DIRTY clothes hamper removed from the boys' bedroom, both to "create" more floor space AND to remove the smell!
*In fact, I had forgotten that I had all that stuff in the second seat once when I picked up my Visiting Teaching partner.  She got in my car, looked back there at all the laundry, and asked, Are you going somewhere?  She later told me she thought it looked like I was planning on running away!  (Not a bad idea sometimes)

Put the crock pot in the dryer when the call for a [short notice] showing comes in the middle of dinner -
and there's no time to clean up and no room in the fridge RIGHT THEN.....

Stash extra "stuff" under the bed.

Or underneath the pile of pillows on your bed - that's a good hiding place, too -
and hopefully people aren't rummaging through your bed sheets....ARE THEY?!?

Spray all the "good-smelling-challenged rooms" (i.e. boys' bedroom & bathrooms) with a nice fragrance.

For the people we actually got an offer from, on their 2nd time through our home,
I made some homemade chocolate chip cookies right before they come (the aroma still fills the Kitchen)
and left them out on a platter for them to partake of.

You might be thinking, What "expertise" does SHE have?  After all, it took her a FREAKIN' 76 TIMES to get an offer(s) on her home!  What the HECK is SHE sharing "tricks" for?  I'm not listening to HER!

But, it was all about TIMING, my friends.  And WHERE we are suppose to be.
And NOT MY TIMING, but The Lord's timing.

You see, 7 years ago, we bought an "option" to build a house on some land near our current home that had now been sold to a builder.  The land used to be these giant corn fields that produced the. best. corn.  We loved walking down there to buy some in the Summer -- when we got there in time before it sold out, that is!  In the Fall, they turned part of the field into a big corn maze.  We were sad to see the corn fields sold off because it held some good memories for us, but that's part of what drew us to that location, we felt "connected" to it.  Although it would not be in our same ward, we would be in all the same schools.  It felt really good to us at the time.  Our plan was to build in the very last phase, Phase 6.  The whole project was suppose to be DONE in two years, which would put us moving around 2007.  This was about 2 years sooner than we had planned on moving when we first bought our current home, but like I said, It felt good to us.

And then the housing market went down the toilet.
And this new development didn't get started on schedule, and then the homes in the earliest phases weren't selling fast enough, either, so their "two-year-plan" was no longer a reality.  But, we didn't mind because that gave us more time to stay in our current home like we had wanted to - and to build more equity/pay our mortgage down further and to save more money, etc.

But then the housing market stayed IN the toilet.
And this new development was getting further and further behind schedule, and they weren't opening up later phases until their current phases were all sold which just wasn't happening very rapidly.  The builder had been struggling through this project for four years trying to stay ahead of their bank obligations that they have on this development. It had certainly been a lot different from what they had projected from the very start of
this project.  But, we had reached the point in our lives and the time that we had planned on moving.  We had wanted to move BEFORE Ryan started High School, even while he was still in Jr. High, and get all the kids settled in schools before they got too old and it became harder to leave.  So, we kind of gave up on the new build idea.

So, we started looking at existing homes instead.
(But left our "option" money with the build project)
We had our Realtor show us many, many houses.  On multiple occasions.  We probably looked at 40 or more houses.  The whole time, I had prayed that I would KNOW when we saw the RIGHT HOUSE.  That I would feel good about it.  I was looking for the same experience I had when we walked into our current home - within my first few steps into this house, I blurted out, I LOVE IT!  We even went back to a few houses a couple of times.  One house even changed their kitchen paint to a neutral beige color since our Realtor had told their Realtor that we hated the Orange Kitchen!  But, the paint overhaul still didn't cause me to feel good about it.  There WAS one house that I thought was IT - my heart stirred within me right there in the front foyer - but it turned out Matt had some serious objections about it, mainly because on the drive up there, we passed THREE BMWs - no lie!  We even stopped looking for a while because we were kind of disheartened when we never could find THE ONE that I felt good about.  On multiple occasions during this time, the thought/voice came to my mind, You felt good about building [in the corn fields.]   But, our current home wasn't selling anyway, so the urgency wasn't there.

So, time went on, and we continued to look at houses.  We had first included four cities in our search; Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington, & Kaysville, but truth be told, whenever I thought about leaving Farmington, I was SICK - even though Bountiful is my beloved Alma Mater!  And then our oldest, Ryan, really started talking about how he didn't want to leave his school.  At the time, his Jr. High fed into two different High Schools, and he said he'd be fine going to either of those since he had Jr. High friends going to both, so that narrowed down the cities where we could look and move down to threeAND THEN, our next son, Kyle, who typically is hesitant to tell his feelings, revealed that he really didn't want to go to any other Jr. High except for the one we currently lived in the boundaries for, so that eliminated one more city from our search.  And then they changed the Jr. High boundaries, which left us with only Farmington to work with.  Which is the place we LOVE and have always felt the best about anyways.  We just weren't finding the "perfect house" so we had tried to broaden our search.  People were telling me there was no such thing as a perfect house.  To which I silently thought, Unless you build your own "perfect" house.  Then the little girls begged to stay in their same Elementary School...and then later, our same ward.  Now, where were we suppose to look for a house?

About 15 months ago, in Feb. 2011, our ward boundaries changed (enlarged) to include the new build site.  At that time, many of our ward members were asking us, Why don't you build in the new neighborhood?  Then you can still be in our same ward!  Well, because, 5 1/2 yrs. after announcing the project, they were just barely plowing some dirt roads into Phase 5.  Our phase, Phase 6, was probably still at least 2-3 years off, and we were ready to move now.  But, interestingly enough, the more people asked me that question, my answer began to change to, We might.  Who knows [if we'll ever be able to find an existing house we like and feel good about].  And the thought, You felt good about building, was brought to my remembrance - again!  But, the new-build project didn't seem to be working out, so it didn't seem like a viable option.

Then 6 months later, I was released from my Primary Presidency calling and immediately called to the Young Women's Presidency in our ward.
In the Bishop's office, when I was extended the calling, sitting beside my husband, I remarked, Does THIS mean I can't move?
To which the Bishopric member responded, We hope so!
That day, the newly called Young Women's President came to talk to me.  She shared with me the very strong spiritual experience she had had when given the task of choosing counselors for her presidency.  She said MY NAME came to her mind and heart immediately. Strongly, almost forcefullyDeliberately.  And without a doubt.  She admitted to me she thought, That's crazy!  Her house is For Sale and she is going to move.  But, she knew.  And she submitted my name anyways.
When she relayed that to me, it caused me to wonder also.....WHY ME?  What does this mean?  Am I supposed to be HERE?
With that thought on my brain and with this new calling, it PUSHED me towards considering the building option again.  It OPENED MY MIND to the idea that I could just change Phases.  I had been stuck on Phase 6 all along, thinking it was that one or nothing.  But, then, all of a sudden, Phase 5 began to be attractive to me - and I couldn't get it out of my mind.

We switched gears with our Realtor.  Instead of looking at existing homes, we told her to now approach The Builder about making a deal with us to build in Phase 5.  The finding-a-plan and the negotiating process took several months, but finally we came to terms and our plans were sent to the city for approval.  And they got stuck there - for months!  But, even that ended up being good because then the great wind storm of Dec. 2011 came and took off our roof & siding and broke a window and we decided to take our home off the market - since it didn't exactly have great curb appeal in it's current condition.  Then it took 4 1/2 months to fight with the Insurance company (and call a hundred times) to get all the repairs approved, paid for, and completed - all the while our new house had started to be built - and I was stressing because I knew we needed to get our current home back on the market!  But, after it was all done, the projects, our new roof especially, really improved the look and condition of our home.  So, the storm was really in our favor!  :)  A $1,000 deductible for $15,000 worth of work!

We got our home back up For Sale in April - almost half-way into our new home's completion.  We had always prayed, and fasted several times, that our home would sell, but at this time, Matt & I started to pray even more fervently.
I was getting annoyed with the kid's prayers because they would go something like this, Please help that our house will be clean and look good for those who come see it, so someone will want to buy it.

AND THEN THEY WOULD NEVER DO THEIR CHORES & COMPLAIN WHEN ASKED TO DO ANYTHING!

What?  Did they think that the "house fairy" would come to visit and that every day the house would just magically clean itself all up?!!?  I told Matt that we needed an "intervention" during our next Family Home Evening.  He gave a lesson using the scripture in James 2:20, Faith Without Works is Dead.  To explain the meaning, we gave some examples:

What if you prayed, Please bless me that I'll get straight A's on my report card.  And then you never ever studied, did homework, or turned in assignments?
What if you prayed, Please bless me that I'll lose weight.  And then you sat around all day, inactive, pigging out on chips, Big Macs, and ice cream?
What if you prayed, Please bless me to gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon.  And then you never even opened up the book nor read one word?

They all were making fun of those scenarios and thought those "people" were RIDICULOUS!  Then we informed them that THEY were those "people" in the way they had been praying/failing to act.
It was definitely an, "AH HA!" moment for them.
And then we spent the rest of Family Night clearing out closets and wiping down every floor board and shelf in our home!  We're ALL in this together!  :)  (Are you thinking about High School Musical now?)
As the days followed, they improved and started contributing to our home & family, so now I felt that their prayers were not in vain.  I did a calculation of our new home completion time and also the time it takes to complete a deal after an offer is received, and I came up with a deadline of June 8th (Matt's Birthday) as the date we HAD to sell our home by.  And we started praying accordingly.  (More like pleading.)
Then during the first weekend in May, I went to a scrapbook retreat with a bunch of friends - something we do about 3X a year.  During the course of talking about my situation, one friend told me it sounded like it was time for me to do what her Grandma always taught.  Her Grandma swore by it.  It was her secret weapon in times when an extra measure of blessings was needed, and specifically when a house needed to sell.  Her Grandma had done it - and it worked.  Her parents had done it - and it worked.  And she had done it - and it worked.  (There's my THREE witnesses!)
The secret is THIS:
DOUBLE your Fast Offering.
Don't just increase it by 15%.  Or 20%.  Or 30%.  Or even 50%.  Completely DOUBLE it.
(I had never heard of this theory in regards to selling a house.  And I was intrigued!)
I texted Matt the idea, to which he immediately replied, OK.
And the following day just happened to be Fast Sunday.  Perfect!

I have heard it said of Tithing before that it is not a principle of MONEY, but rather it is a principle of FAITH.  That came to my mind when I was embracing my friend's Grandma's "golden nugget of knowledge."  Yes, doubling our Fast Offering DID involve money, but it was really another way - a harder way, a more out-of-our-comfort-zone way for us to demonstrate our FAITH to Heavenly Father.  It was something in addition to the prayer and fasting that we had already been doing for a while.

And it brought our desired results!  15 days before our deadline!
And talk about TIMING, the people who we have an accepted offer with, are in a contract with their current apartment until July 31st, so aren't in a rush to move.  That is the same time our new house will be done.  They have agreed to close in June (more security for us) but let us live here until July (more convenience for us with only moving once!)  AND we have two "back-up" offers.

Sure, I posted about some changes we made to our home, which surely helped the appearance, but I believe the real reason, or the beginning of getting the ball rolling is the Fast Offering part.  Clearly those ideas/inspiration came to me after showing forth the necessary faith.  Other home selling strategies felt right to us, also, as a result of our actions....which all worked together to lead to a SALE!

And the fact that each of these circumstances, thoughts, events, conversations, and opportunities happened in the just the way that they did, over the last 7 years, led us to exactly the point where we are right now.

My mom used to always say, There are no coincidences.  Everything happens for a reason.

The Lord is in charge.

76

THAT is the magic number.

THAT is the number of times we had to show our home before we got our first offer!

Yes, I said 76.
As in SEVENTY SIX!
Like 70 + 6
or 6 + 70
or 7 tens + 6 ones
or 6 ones + 7 tens
or one more than 75
or one less than 77

CAN YOU TELL I HAVE A 1ST GRADER?   (And I've been overseeing/correcting 1st Grade Math homework a lot lately?  That is, when I haven't been showing our home/preparing our home for a showing.)

Yep, we showed it 54 times the first time around we had it up For Sale, a 13 3/4 month period between Nov. 2010 - Dec. 2011.

And then we showed it 23 times this time around since we've had it up For Sale over the last five weeks.
(We've continued to show it, even after the 1st offer, and will until it's a "done deal" - in case you're wondering why the numbers don't add up!)

If you're one of those people who sold their house to the first person who ever looked at it...you are my new worst enemy!  Especially if you told me of "your experience" while I was in the middle of mine!

I've written a time or two about the "perils" of showing a house:
Who Ya Gonna Call?
My Punishment
A Simple Math Equation
Inspiration from Late Night T.V.
This is the Story of my Life
Here We Go Again

BUT, as a "consolation prize" for showing it 76 TIMES  --  did I mention it was 76 times?  --  we then got THREE OFFERS!

WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS!

Showing Frenzy

If I would've known way back when that by doing TWO THINGS:
1)  a few, simple rearrangements in the Living Room, in the Real Estate world it's know as "staging."
and
2)  putting tile in the laundry room
would create such a "Prospective Buyer's interest" we would've done it months ago!
My text alarm has been "beeping off the hook" with people wanting to see our home.....7 showings just Monday thru Thursday of this week - with some people coming back for a second look!  We're kicked out of our home a lot - having to figure out away-from-home meals and kids hangin' out at the "clubhouse" spot up the street a bit!

It's CRAZY, but it's GOOD.  It's CRAZY GOOD!

I dug up some old photos to show what our front Living Room used to look like:

{Notice the piano and couch placement - don't look at the people!}

Here' what it looks like now:
Arm chairs & end table over there by the windows

Love Seat over there against the solid wall

Piano over there by the half wall/railing

Big Clock over there instead of over the stair landing, so it ties in with the red, "FAMILY" letters above the couch - both can be seen as soon as one enters the front door.
(It seems BIGGER!)
{Sometime in between the "before" & "after" photos, we put in wood floors - 1 1/2+ yrs. ago or so}

And for the Laundry Room - here's a look at the very stylish linoleum, photo circa 2003:
  {The Laundry Room is through that open doorway on the left hand side.  White, beige, and BLUE linoleum flooring - OH MY!  Anything would look better than that!}

And Now:
Tile Flooring

{With minimal costs to do both)

Looking at it now, I feel like, "DUH!  Why did it take us so long to figure it out?!?"  But we're a tad bit slow at things like this.  :)

I can feel the offer(s) coming on SOON!!!

?????????

We all wear Spanx.
{That may well be as close as the similarities ever come in regards to me & celebrities!}

Have you heard of Spanx?

Their founder/owner, Sara Blakely, just made it on the cover of Forbes magazine a couple of months ago because she is now a BILLIONAIRE? (At 41 she’s the youngest woman to join this year’s World’s Billionaires list without help from a husband or an inheritance.)

It's an "undergarment" that smooths out your (MY) lumps and bumps!

And I was so excited when my UPS man brought me my delivery.
Just look at the packaging, it's enough to make you happy.  Isn't it?

Just wrap it up with red tissue paper and give me a "Thank You" note,
and I'm singing the praises of Spanx before I ever even put them on my body!

I love one of their tag lines:  "We've got your butt covered!"

When asked by both The View hosts and Bonnie Hunt (on separate occasions) how she got her post-baby body back so quickly after giving birth to twins, Julie Bowen replied, “SPANX you very much! SPANX SPANX SPANX.”

How come no one is asking ME that question? -  almost 4 years after my last baby?!?  ;)

I'm not saying Spanx will make you a size 0 if you are far from that naturally.   All I know is that it got me into THIS dress when I couldn't before - and with a less string-of-sausage-chubs-look!  :)

Funny thing is -- I got that dress on a great clearance sale,
so my "undergarments" cost more than my actual dress!

Not a paid advertisement. I just love these Spanx, man. Over and out.

Are You Sure we Share the Same Genetics?

Haylee's about as big around as my pinkie....
Yet, she's on the "ALL CARB DIET".  Have you heard of that one?  I'm sure you've heard of the "low carb" or the "no carb" diets, but Haylee has no interest in those - she prefers the "NOTHING-BUT-CARBS" diet.  If you're a bit dyslexic or have 40+ yr. old vision, your eyes may have read it this way: "All CRAP" and "Nothing-but-CRAP."
It's pretty much the same thing!  No meaning lost with that mistake.  :)

Yet, she looks like this:
In our family, every week, a different person gets to decide the dinner menu [then help cook] for one night.  Do you know what her choices have been over the last few months?  I tried to tell her to pick a "real meal."  She says her choices ARE real....

She eats SO WELL on these nights!  (As compared to "normal" nights when she is forced to take one morsel and just stares at it for 30 min.)  By complete contrast, on "Haylee's Choice" nights....Seconds?  Thirds?  Fourths?  YES.  She takes 'em!

And for her most recent birthday, she wanted a "Cookie Bar" - and she put us all to shame in her consumption abilities.

Yet, she looks like this....
{the Karate belt could go around her 4 times!)

On the flip-side, while I was shopping at Costco yesterday, I just LOOKED at the Chocolate Dipped Shortbread Cookies, and I'm up about 3  1/2 pounds this morning!?!!?!

If It's Not "On the House" -- I Don't Want It

I think when Ryan decided to go to Prom, he thought the only cost involved would be buying the actual tickets to the dance.  ($20.00 - which he's already complained to me about being too high.)  After all, he just barely became "dating eligible" with his recent 16th birthday, so he's never even been to a school dance before.  And, frankly, he doesn't spend his "thinking time" thinking about things like the logistics of PROM -- there's way too many sports stats to fill up that time with!  :)

It would be an understatement to say that Ryan has been BLOWN AWAY with the total expense associated with PROM.

And because "entertainment" is one of the categories that our children are responsible for funding themselves (they all have opportunities to earn money, IF THEY CHOOSE), it's been quite fun to watch, and SO GOOD for him to experience how to spend his money - which will surely aid him in his maturity.

Wanting to go to PROM, but NOT wanting the financial obligation, he asked me (accused) if I paid for my own [Girls' Choice] High School dances that I went to.

Of Course.

It was MY date.  Who else would pay for MY date.  Did he think my parents would?  HOW EMBARRASSING for your parents to pay for YOUR dates!!!
{He silently agreed.}
But that didn't stop him from going to his Dad with the same question:
Dad, did YOU pay for your PROM dates?
Uhhhhh.....errrr....uhhhhh....ummm....I...can't...remember...
(We all laughed our heads off at his response....and his attempt in trying not to look like a loser!)

So, I told him he needed to rent a tuxedo.
He asked how much that would cost.
I said, Let's google it.
Google told us it could run about $90.00.
Ryan, who knows he footin' the bill, said he didn't need to wear a tux.
I told him HE WAS GOING TO PROM.  And PROM = TUX!
He thought wearing his regular church suit would be just fine.
I told him it would be fine IF he was going to the Homecoming dance, but THIS IS PROM!
I even polled my Young Women at church, and they want their dates to wear a tux - this "proof" helped a little.
Then he came up with the idea to just wear his Tuxedo shirt, bow tie, and cumberband with just regular black dress pants that he had to wear in his Percussion performances last year.
I asked him when's the last time he'd actually worn that shirt.
Fuhgget about it!  (He's most definitely grown since then!)
We found a website online that has an interactive "Customize Your Own Tux" program.  I set Ryan up on that and he found "the look" he liked the best.

    Pink Tuxedo Shirt

Shiny Silver Vest & Hankie

White Jacket with Black Trim

Black Tux Pants (with striping)

Black & White Shiny "Tux" Shoes

And then we went to the Tuxedo Rental Shoppe.

They didn't even carry pink tuxedo shirts - you have to special order them for $25.00
The Hankie and the shoes are not included with the tux rental - the hankie is an extra $4.00 on top of the tux rental.
The white jacket with black trim is considered a "speciality" tux -- with a 300% price increase over the lowest-priced all black jacket.
The black & white shoes were $18.00 vs. all black shoes for $12.00.  (He tried telling me he could wear his regular black shoes he had at home - nope!  They are NOT "tux quality.")
But, Good News! There was no price difference on black pants with or without striping.

Ryan quickly change "his taste" in tuxes.
(Although, if I were paying, I'm sure he would just "have to have" that first choice!)

He decided on this one:
 {the most conservatively priced tux}

But, we did find out, had we ordered MORE THAN a week in advance, we could've gotten a $20.00 discount instead of the $10.00 one we did receive.  Lesson learned for next time.

Then I told him he had to get her a corsage.
He replied, They better not cost more than $10.00.
Oh, They will!  I informed him.
{groan}
Why can't I just pick her a flower from our yard?
#1  We don't have any decent ones in our yard.  #2  THIS IS PROM - and she'll be getting you a boutonniere!
Why can't I just tell her, you don't get me one, and I won't get you one?
THIS IS PROM - she needs a corsage.

While grocery shopping at Harmon's this week, I noticed they have a good-sized floral dept. and there was a lady there, so I went up to her and asked if they did corsages, by chance.
They do!
And there are different "levels" of corsages.
A wrist corsage with an elastic band.

A wrist corsage with a crystal beads bracelet look.

And a wrist corsage with rhinestones as the bracelet.

Which all increased in price as the wrist band got fancier.
I reported this all to Ryan when he came home....he didn't even know what crystals and rhinestones were!
I'm going with the regular elastic band, he immediately decided.

He's also been combing the newspaper ads for coupons to the "Get Air" Trampoline Park they are going to as part of the leading-up-to-PROM activities.

And they're doing a progressive dinner at three different boys' houses to avoid a high restaurant bill....although Ryan's dream is to go to Ruth's Chris for PROM....and have someone else pay for it, of course!

One of the boy's sisters is a "budding photographer," so she is taking them on location for their PROM pictures.  They'll be better and less expensive than getting pictures at the PROM venue anyways.

IT'S SO INTERESTING HOW YOUR "NEEDS" CHANGE WHEN YOU GET TO FORK OVER THE CASH YOURSELF!!!

:)

*As a sidenote....according to Wikipedia, ( I had to refer Ryan to the Internet again - it has more clout than I these days!) Prom expectations/traditions ARE everything I was telling him, but it also sited an interesting (& disturbing) fact:  The cost of prom in the United States in 2012 averages $1078 per family.
WHAT?!?  Obviously, the "United States" is very different from Utah.  That gives Ryan something else to be grateful for!

Kids Say the Darndest Things - Apr. '12 Edidtion

Taken from the sidebar...

I was talking to Brookelle about the fact that she is the ONLY one in our whole family who has their own bedroom...
Brookelle: "We need another human in our family."
Me: "Do you wish you had your twin brother, Brady, so you could share a room with him?"
Brookelle: "Yeah. Where is he?"
Me: "Did you leave him up in heaven, and you just came down alone?"
Brookelle: "Yep. That means he gets to see Jesus ALL a lot!"
Me: "Yep."
Brookelle: "When am I going to go to heaven?"
Me: "You lived in heaven before you came to our family."
Brookelle: "I want to go and see Jesus again!"
4/12

Miss B was playing alone in the next room....

Brookelle: "Mother!"
Me: "What?"
Brookelle: "I'm not talking to YOU!"
Me: "Oh, I thought you were. I heard you call, 'Mother,' and that's me!"
Brookelle: "No, YOU ARE MAMA!"
(She was just pretend playing) 4/12

We had a special musical number in church on Sunday. It consisted of a pianist, violinist, and a clarinetist....
Brookelle: "Why is that guy blowing into that big straw?" 4/12

Here We Go Again

We're back "on the market."
(after a 100+ days hiatus from the first time around)

Which means our house is not our own!

And we can't have anything out on the counters.
We can't make stacks of papers on the computer desk.
Every bed has to be made.
Every dresser drawer pushed all the way closed - and not too much "stuff" on top of it.
Every towel hung up just right.
and CLEAN towels at that, with no toothpaste smears on them - the white monogrammed ones come out in the Master Bath for a showing.
All floors vacuumed, swept, and mopped.
The Lily smell has to be kept under control with frequent cage cleanings and/or lots of Air Wick plug-ins.
Laundry has to be kept up on to avoid "accident" panty and/or teenage BOY smells!
and also FOLDED and PUT AWAY.
Garbage cans have to stay empty.
All papers, magnets, artwork have to be taken off the front of the fridge.
All toilets have to be kept flushed.
The top of the dryer cannot be used as a "dumping spot."
The weeds in the driveway/sidewalk crack have to be pulled.
The table needs to be wiped off and all chairs tucked in.
Shoes have to all find their home in closets or the "shoe basket" in the garage - none are allowed lying around the house.
The Love Sac has to be poofed up.
The armoir and pantry doors closed.
The toys all on their [labeled] shelf.
The soap dispenser filled and positioned just exactly right next to all sinks.
Rugs have to be straightened.
Mirrors and windows need to be free of smudges and splatters.
The books have to be arranged nicely in a row, biggest to smallest, in the bookshelves.
We can't have any dust build up.
Closets need to be kept 25% empty/clear and organized.
The piano books need to all be put away and the piano lid closed.
The magazines need to be arranged just so on the end table.
Smashed worm guts need to be sprayed off the porch and walks.
All tub toys, grody shampoo bottles and/or soap dishes, used razors, and shedding hair needs to be removed form showers and tubs.
We can't have any dishes in the sink - which means the dishwasher always has to be emptied, also.
or the toaster left out on the counter.
and no condom wrappers left on the floor.
WAIT!  HOW DID THAT GET IN THERE?!? :)

And the last things before we leave the house for a showing....

All the blinds have to be open.
Turn all the lights on, with the ceiling fans going.
And spray some good-smelling something.

All while my family of 7 is living in this home!

I'm telling ya, I need medication during this time...and a maid!  It's gonna either drive me to drink or to the Looney Bin - or both!

Here's praying for THIS:

High School Flashback #2

I had a very serious deja vous recently.

Last Saturday night, I found myself staking out a teenager's house. And then positioning my car in the perfect spot so that I could both keep on eye on the house AND be able to get away fast.

The passengers in my car were dressed in black hoodies so as not to be seen by the residents of the house or by anyone else in the neighborhood who might be on watch while they "left their mark" at the house and in the yard.

If by chance a witness did happen to appear, I was ready to give the signal - two quick taps on the car brake pedal - so they could duck for cover.

Fortunately, the job was completed in hardly no time at all (although it seemed like a very long, slow motion-ish, time to the participants in the moment) so my flashing light tactic wasn't even needed.

The little sisters were sent back to my getaway car first to ensure they were not caught. Then we all crouched down in the car, with our eyes barely above the bottom of the window to watch what unfolded next.......we saw our own family's teenager ring the doorbell of the house, leap off the porch and skedaddle to the far side of the house before disappearing into the neighbor's yard in 1.7 seconds flat! It really was quite remarkable since this is the same boy who, most of the time, looks like he's got cement bricks in his shoes when he runs. I figured he would just hide behind the neighbor's bushes until the door was answered since he couldn't make it back to the car in time - BUT I WAS WRONG - the next thing I know, he books it to my car, opens the car door and dives back into the front seat....all before the front door was even opened. Literally, I've never seen him move that fast! Just goes to show what adrenaline will enable the body to do! Good 'ol Fight or Flight.

We did see someone open the door. That someone left, and went and got someone else. And then that someone else walked out onto the porch and picked up the clue. After everyone was back in the house and the door was closed, we drove away, on the way down the street and for half the ride back home, my teenager's heart was thumping out of his chest (from the running or from the excitement?)

It was official. My son had just asked a girl to his first High School PROM.
{yikes. How old does that make me?}

Fast Forward two days.

My son was walking out our front door, when he immediately ran back inside. He told me he had just seen the girl driving down the street in front of our house - at least he thought he had. Then the family went out on the front lawn to play a good 'ol game of "Red Light, Green Light" for our Family Night Activity. Next thing I know, he's running back inside again. It was confirmed. The girl, driving the same car, had just driven up the street in front of our house - and her little brother was in the car. Since she doesn't live in our neighborhood, it appears it was her turn to stake out our house, but we were [inadvertently] messing it up for her!

About a half hour after coming in the house, our doorbell rings. Of course, everyone and their dog started to stampede to the door. Since I figured it was probably a "messenger" (in the form of her little brother), I "called off the dogs" and instructed everyone to allow me to answer the door calm, cool, and collected like. (yeah, right!) There was no person there, but instead, a "answer" in the form of a jar of fish.

And when the kids saw that, they charged right past me, out the front door, and proceeded to run up and down the street, yelling, "Where are you?" All the while, ignoring my warnings that, surely, they were being watched at that very moment, and to not act like hooligans. But, why should that night be any different from any other and they start listening to me?

The very wording on her answer rang a bell with me....Of all the fish in the sea, I'm glad you picked me!.... In fact, I'm pretty sure the same idea was involved in my High School's "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance asking/answering from 1986. I guess they get recycled every 25 yrs. or so....?

{I've heard (though not first-hand knowledge) that my date is now "playing for the other team" - was it because of this date? I didn't think it was that bad!}

The minute he asked her, I told him it was very important to keep his bedroom clean for the whole next week because there was a possibility that she would be calling me and asking if she could do something to/leave something in his bedroom in the form of an answer. This thought made him very uncomfortable. And I told him I wasn't going to clean it up for him, so he'd just have to be humiliated if she came and it was a disaster.
He pleaded that I at least give him warning like, It'd be a REALLY good idea if you left your room clean today! (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)
To which I replied, I AM giving you a warning - right now - keep it clean for a week!
Well, then she answered 2 days later - and just on the front porch - so I didn't even get any "cleaning benefits" out of it! DANG! :)

But, seriously - wasn't I just doing this very thing myself? - driving past boys' houses, on "stake outs" with my friends, and anonymously calling (Caller ID didn't exist) our prospective dates' mothers to see if they had been asked yet, leaving surprises in boys' bedrooms (that their mother's may or may not have clean up for them)......and vice versa, the boys to me?!?

It all came back to me - just like riding a bike - it was second nature to me, I'm glad I could show my son the ropes. :)

------

Although, times have changed somewhat, I noticed. I attempted to call the girl's parents to inquire if she had been asked yet, but they were never home. So, then I tried to call her best friend to ask her, but she wasn't home either -- apparently no one uses their home phone anymore!

So, I ended up texting the girl from my [unrecognizable] cell phone:
Me: Have you been asked to Prom yet?
The girl: Who is this? And no.
Me: I am a Secret Investigator.
The girl: (no response)
